Winnie Szeto

Winnie was born in Hong Kong and moved to Canada with her family when she was 6 years old.  Being from a working class family, Winnie had to work hard and grow up fast.  From a very young age, she fulfilled her role as “Big Sis”, taking care of her brother and baby sister while both of her parents worked long hours.  As a young adult, Winnie often worked multiple part-time jobs to put herself through university.

Winnie’s hard work and determination paid off.  Winnie is now a tax lawyer at Couzin Taylor LLP, a law firm affiliated with Ernst & Young LLP.  Prior to joining Couzin Taylor, she worked at a national law firm in Toronto and clerked at the Tax Court of Canada.  She is a graduate of the University of Toronto (BA), Osgoode Hall Law School (LL.B.) and Schulich School of Business (IMBA).  Being the first in her family to ever go to university, she is the family’s pride and joy.

When she gets the chance, Winnie loves to vacation in warm and sunny places like Hawaii and the Caribbean.  Winnie and her husband, Daniel, are newbie scuba diving enthusiasts as they just got their scuba diving certification in March of 2012!  She can’t wait to go diving again...

Currently, Winnie lives in Thornhill with Daniel and their 3 beloved dogs, Huey, Zoey and Boey.

Now Winnie needs your help.

In April 2012, Winnie was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia or CML, a cancer of the white blood cells.  At the time of her initial diagnosis, she was in the “chronic” phase of the disease, which in most cases could be successfully managed by medication.

In October 2012, Winnie visited Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) for a routine blood test to monitor her white blood count.  The results of that test indicated that the cancer had progressed to the “blast crisis” phase.  Only 6% of people with CML in the chronic phase ever progress to blast crisis.  CML in blast crisis behaves like an acute leukemia, with rapid progression and short survival. It is treated aggressively like an acute leukemia.

The only way that Winnie can be cured of this horrible disease is to have a successful bone marrow transplant as soon as possible.  Her brother and sister were tested but neither were a match.  PMH has begun the process of finding an unrelated bone marrow donor for her.  Although anyone could be the right match, those of Chinese heritage are most likely to be a match for Winnie.

Emily Needs Stem Cells

Emily Needs Stem Cells

Emily Sun (on left in photo) is a 36-year-old Australian mother of Chinese ancestry who has been battling lymphatic cancer since 2010. With treatment resistant disease, her only chance of survival now is through a stem cell transplant.

Emily has a lot to live for—especially her five-year-old son Luke, who’s had to watch his mother undergo treatment since he was three. Read more about Emily at Parenting With Cancer.

With a higher chance to find a match within one's own ethnic group, Emily needs a stem cell donor of Asian descent. The problem is that Emily is having difficulty finding a match. The donor can be from anywhere in the world, but a match would more likely be found in someone of Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Vietnamese, or Singaporean descent.

Register to be a potential stem cell donor now at www.OneMatch.ca (for Canadian citizens and residents). You could be the one to save the beautiful life of Emily or other patients

24-year-old Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia William Tse in need of a matched stem cell donor for transplant

24-year-old William Tse was born and raised in the island city of Singapore. After finishing up hight school in and the National Services in Singapore, he went to college in the United States at the University of Southern California, eventually graduating college in 3 years with Cum Laude honors in 2012! William was on track to finish his MSc in Business Taxation and also received an offer from KPMG to start as a Tax Associate for Fall 2013.

On January 14, 2013, William was hospitalized and eventually diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, sub-typed Philadelphia chromosome (9-22 translocation). This is a rare form of leukemia that is very difficult to treat and a bone marrow transplant is the primary treatment option.

William’s leukemia is in remission after a series of chemotherapy treatment at the University of Southern California Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, and his doctors are now searching the bone marrow registries for a potential donor for a bone marrow transplant to ensure William remain cancer-free. Both his brothers, Vince and Marvin, are not matches, so we need your help to grow these registries so that there is a better chance of finding matched donors for William and others who need bone marrow transplants!

Be a match for William and other patients now by registering at www.OneMatch.ca (for Canadian citizens and residents).
